Downsizing Made Easy: Advice for Seniors from Julie Wyss and SilverNest Estates

Downsizing after accumulating a lifetime of things to love can be an incredibly daunting task for anyone, but as a senior, you may be especially hard hit. Between the strong emotional attachments you’ve likely developed for the things you’ve carefully collected and the possibility of declining health and stiffening mobility, tackling an entire home’s worth of personal effects can seem like climbing a mountain with no gear.

That’s where I step in. As a Seniors Real Estate Specialist®, I’ll handle all aspects of your downsizing activities for you so you can relax and focus on opening the next chapter of your life healthy, happy, and financially secure.

Here Are My Top Tips for Downsizing to Make Room for Your New Lifestyle:

Start by Assessing Your Needs: It’s time to sit down and evaluate what you truly need to have in your life and what you can let go. Think about your potential new living space and the lifestyle you want to build: which furniture, knick-knacks, and other personal possessions will fit comfortably and bring you joy while leaving plenty of breathing room for your new lifestyle?

Sort and Declutter: Go through your belongings methodically. Create categories like Keep, Donate/Sell, and Discard. Keep the items that have sentimental value, make you happy, or are essential. Consider digitizing photos and documents to save space. Not sure how to digitize? This is an excellent task to delegate to a junior family member or hire out to a student who wants to make a bit of coffee money.

Get Help: Enlist family, friends, or professional organizers to help you sort, categorize, and lift items into boxes and onto the truck. Having a support system in place makes the downsizing process easier, both physically and emotionally.

Prioritize Health and Safety: Look around your new home from the perspective of your health and safety needs. Is everything in your new space easily accessible? Is it comfortable? Does it make you happy? If not, start making the changes you need and get rid of any item that might pose an unnecessary hazard.

Plan for the New Space: Measure your new living space to determine where each personal item and furniture piece will fit. If you plan the layout before moving, you’ll minimize unpleasant surprises and avoid unnecessary moving expenses.

Sell or Donate Items: Host a yard sale, sell items online, or donate your unwanted things to charities. Many organizations welcome gently used furniture, clothing, and household items.

Embrace the Change: Downsizing often involves letting go of familiar things, which is not easy for some people to do. But if you can embrace your new chapter and focus on the positive aspects of your simpler, more manageable life, you’ll start having fun and enjoying your golden years much sooner.
