In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I had the unique opportunity to help my clients Ivan and Kata, a lovely couple who owned a thriving restaurant and bar in Mountain View, CA. Their successful business afforded them a comfortable life in a charming neighborhood in San Jose, where Ivan’s brother, Josip, also resided in a home next door.
But when the pandemic struck, Ivan and Kata’s lives were turned upside down. Forced to close their business during California’s Stay-at-Home order, they struggled to stay afloat financially. Even when restrictions eased, the state’s limitations were still so stringent that the couple couldn’t fully reopen their establishment. Ultimately, they faced the heartbreaking decision to close their family business, sell two homes—theirs and Josip’s—and leave the United States.
They called me, Julie Wyss, to guide them through the process of selling their homes. As an expert in Silicon Valley real estate for almost twenty years, I have the necessary knowledge and a deep network of supporting professionals that make me perfect for exactly this type of scenario. Helping Ivan, Kata, and Josip through their heartbreaking transition was a challenge I took on with a heavy heart and a great determination to help them succeed.
Before becoming a successful restaurant owner, Ivan had been a skilled a contractor. He had kept his home in excellent condition, even adding an amazing pool and a cozy pool house that made his home an extra-special gem. Taking advantage of these rare and wonderful backyard features, we staged the home tastefully, emphasizing the outdoor space by creating a resort-like atmosphere around the pool. The transformation was stunning and drew significant attention from buyers.
Josip’s home also required minimal work, but its enormous yard was overrun with weeds. We brought in our yard crew, installed an irrigation system, and laid down a lush lawn to highlight the large and rare piece of land in Silicon Valley. We staged this home as well, making it look inviting and desirable.
Despite the challenges of selling one home—let alone two—during the pandemic, we successfully sold both homes for top dollar. Ivan, Kata, and Josip were incredibly grateful, and their warm gratitude extended into a heartfelt invitation to visit them in Croatia. I eagerly look forward to accepting their invitation and reuniting with these wonderful sellers in their new home.
Similar scenarios played out across Silicon Valley during and after the pandemic. For people in their shoes, having an experienced and empathetic partner to guide them through the complex world of Silicon Valley real estate may have meant the difference between utter ruin and a strong second chance. It was my honor to help provide the latter to Ivan and Kata’s family, who are once again thriving together in their new home.
Sincerely,
Julie
